The Denmark visa comes from the Norwegian centre: representation, documents and timescales

People looking for the Danish embassy in Baku to get a Denmark visa never find it, because there is none. On Schengen visas Denmark is represented in Azerbaijan by Norway, and documents go to Norway’s visa centre in Baku, that is to VFS Global. The same centre works for Finland and Iceland. Those who do not know this waste time applying to Denmark’s honorary consulate or to other centres.

This article explains how the Denmark visa process actually works, the Norwegian centre’s requirements, the documents and what is particular about a trip to Copenhagen.

Why does the Denmark visa come from the Norwegian centre?

Under the Schengen rules, if a country has no visa-issuing consulate in a given state, another Schengen country may represent it. The Scandinavian countries have divided this among themselves: in Azerbaijan, Norway accepts Schengen visa applications on behalf of Denmark, Finland and Iceland. So your documents are taken at the Norwegian visa centre, and the decision is made by the Norwegian consulate in Denmark’s name. The visa may show Norway as the issuing country; it is an ordinary Schengen visa and causes no problem on entry to Denmark. Where you should apply is set out country by country on the official page of Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Norwegian centre has one condition: only citizens of Azerbaijan and people officially resident in Azerbaijan may apply. A citizen of another country cannot apply for a Danish visa in Baku.

Documents for a Denmark visa

The Norwegian centre’s document list is the same for Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Everything must be in English or Norwegian; documents in Azerbaijani or Russian are submitted with a translation.

Most people travelling to Scandinavia see several countries together: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo. In that case the visa is taken from the country with the most nights. Since documents for all three are taken at the same Norwegian centre in Baku this is convenient in practice, but the main country must be stated correctly on the form.

How to get from Baku to Copenhagen

There is no direct flight. The most used routes are Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, LOT via Warsaw and Lufthansa via Frankfurt, taking 7 to 9 hours in all. Baku–Copenhagen fares are mid-range among Schengen destinations and rise in summer and in December. Getting from Copenhagen to Stockholm and Oslo by train or low-cost airline is easy.

Family trips combining Legoland with Copenhagen are popular among travellers from Azerbaijan. Among European tours covering the three Scandinavian capitals, this route runs in the summer months, and the visa documents are prepared together with the operator.

What to know before the trip

  • Money. The Danish krone, not the euro. Cards work everywhere and cash is hardly needed.
  • Prices. One of Europe’s most expensive countries: lunch in a restaurant is 30–40 euros and hotels start at 150.
  • Season. May to September is the best time. In winter the day lasts 7 hours and the weather is wet.
  • Transport. Copenhagen is a bicycle city, and hiring a bike is the most comfortable way to get around.

Frequently asked questions about the Denmark visa

How long does it take?

Usually 15 days, up to 30 in the summer season. Adding the wait for an appointment at the Norwegian centre, the whole process runs 4–6 weeks. Start 2 months before the trip.

Can you go to Greenland on a Danish visa?

No. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not part of the Schengen area, and to travel there you must state it separately on the application; the visa is then issued with a special note.

Does Denmark’s honorary consulate issue visas?

No. The honorary consulate in Baku can give information but does not take visa applications. Documents go only to the Norwegian visa centre.

In closing

The right door for a Denmark visa is the Norwegian visa centre. The rest is an ordinary Schengen process: 35 euros, documents in English, 15 days. The Viza.az team helps with translating the documents, booking the appointment at the Norwegian centre and building the Scandinavian route correctly from a visa point of view.
