What is a multi visa and how many years does each country give it for?

The words multi visa appear in no official document, yet everybody uses them. Someone comes out of an embassy and says they have been given a multi visa. What is meant is that the visa is multiple-entry, and the problem is that the phrase mixes up two completely different numbers. Below I have written how a multi visa actually appears on the visa, how many years each country gives it for, and how the day count is done.

What a multi visa is and how it appears on the visa

Multi visa is a name that comes from everyday speech. No such word is written on the visa itself. What is there is a line saying “Number of entries”, and against it either a figure or MULT.

If it says one, you enter the country once and the visa is finished when you leave, even if time is left on it. If it says MULT, you can go in and out as many times as you like while the visa is valid. Sometimes it says two, and then you have the right to exactly two entries.

And here is the point that gets confused most: the validity of the visa and the length of stay are not the same thing. The first shows until when the visa works, the second how many days you may spend in the country during that period. A five-year multi visa does not give you the right to live there for five years.

A Schengen multi visa comes step by step

In Schengen a long-term visa is not had by asking, it is earned. The system is called the cascade and its logic is simple: someone who has used their past visas by the rules gets a longer period next time. If you have used three visas in the last two years, you have a chance of a one-year multi visa, after that a two-year one, then a five-year one.

Keep one condition in mind always: a visa cannot outlast your passport. If your passport has two years left, a five-year visa will not be issued. If you are hoping for a long-term visa, renewing the passport in advance is the more sensible move.

Which countries give a multi visa

Every country has its own logic and the periods differ a great deal. For citizens of Azerbaijan the picture is roughly this.

CountryHow many years the visa runsStay per entry
Schengen1, 2 or 5 years, by the cascade90 days in 180
America12 months, multiple entrySet at the border, usually up to 6 months
Britain2, 5 or 10 years6 months per trip
CanadaUntil the passport expires, up to 10 yearsUp to 6 months per entry
Saudi Arabia1 year90 days
Bahrain1 year, fee 44 dinars90 days
Vietnam90 days, multiple-entry option90 days

Do not mix up the second and third columns of the table. Britain gives a ten-year visa, but you cannot stay more than six months on any one trip. Saudi Arabia gives only one year, and in exchange allows ninety days on each entry. America’s period and number of entries for our citizens are given in the State Department’s reciprocity table.

How many days can you stay on a multi visa

In Schengen the count is done with a rolling window. Any 180-day period is looked at, and in it you may not stay more than 90 days. So if you stayed forty days in March, in June only the days left are yours; no new count opens.

In America and Britain the logic is different. There is no such day budget there: at each entry the border officer writes you a separate period and shows it in the note in your passport. So two trips on the same visa can get completely different periods.

Overstaying by a single day is the most expensive mistake there is. The system records it and next time your chance of a long-term multi visa drops to almost nothing. Always plan the return date with a day in hand, and choose your air ticket dates by the same logic.

Do not confuse it with visa-free travel

Some people try to get a visa for a country they can go to without one anyway. Türkiye, Georgia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and, from 2026, China admit our passport visa-free, and there is no need to apply separately. On these routes, ready-made tour packages require no visa documents and so are put together in a day or two.

But visa-free does not mean limitless. There is a day count there too: in China 30 days per trip and 90 days in total in 180, and the Balkan countries outside Schengen have their own separate limits. What a multi visa and a visa-free regime have in common is that in both, the days are yours to count.

In short

A multi visa is nothing but the MULT line on the visa, not a magic status. Keep the number of entries and the length of stay apart, do not break the cascade in Schengen, count the days yourself and do not overstay by even a day. The document pack for a long-term visa has to be built with that logic, and if you want to look at it together, fill in the application form.

Note: the final decision on the visa’s validity and the number of entries is the consulate’s, and meeting the rules is not an automatic guarantee.
