The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen area, so a separate national visa is required. Even if you hold a Schengen visa, it does not give you the right to enter Britain. The fee is different too: 35 euros for Schengen and £135 for Britain.
You can stay up to 6 months on a single entry. The visa can be issued for 2, 5 or 10 years, but that does not change the 6-month limit on each stay. If the total time you spend in the country exceeds half the year, questions may arise at the border.
The standard processing time is about 3 weeks (15 working days). Priority services exist, but they require an extra payment and are not available in every category. As the period can stretch in high season, applying early is safer.
No language certificate is required for tourist and business trips. The language requirement applies mainly to the study, work and family reunification categories. In a tourist application, however, an official English translation of the documents is essential.
All documents must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation. The translation must state the translator’s name, contact details and the date. Unofficial translations are not accepted.
No, once the documents are handed in the passport stays at the application centre and is returned after the decision. Do not plan a trip to another country during this period. There is a separate service for getting the passport back urgently, but the application may then be treated as withdrawn.
The classic right of appeal is limited for visitor visas. The more practical route is to remove the reason for the refusal and apply again. The refusal letter states specifically which condition was not met.
