Visa to Canada: frequently asked questions

Yes. Fingerprints and a photograph are given at the application centre and remain valid for 10 years. If you make a new application within that period you do not have to give the biometrics again. The biometrics fee is calculated separately from the consular fee.

Canadian applications are processed in a queue in the online system, and the period varies with the season, the number of applications and how complete the documents are. Fifteen to thirty working days is a realistic expectation, but it can stretch if additional checks are needed. Applying at least two months before the travel date is recommended.

Buying a confirmed ticket is neither required nor recommended. A booking confirmation and a clear travel plan are enough. Buying an expensive ticket before the visa is granted is an unnecessary risk.

Yes. An invitation is not compulsory for a tourist trip; a hotel booking and documents showing your financial means are enough. If you are planning to visit relatives or friends, an invitation strengthens the application, but documents about the inviting person’s status are required too.

No official minimum is published. What is looked at in practice is whether the funds match the length of your trip and your plan: daily spending, accommodation and tickets are taken into account. Consistent movement on the account is more convincing than a single large transfer.

No. A Canadian visa covers entry to Canada only; a separate visa is needed for the United States. Passing through US territory, including in transit, follows its own rules.

The refusal letter gives the reason — the most common are weak financial cover and insufficient proof of the intention to return. Once the reason has been removed you can apply again. Reapplying with the same documents usually does not change the outcome.

Checking the documents first, drawing up an individual list, completing the online application and planning the biometrics appointment are down to us. We keep you informed of the status throughout the process. The decision, though, is made solely by Canada’s immigration authority.
