Czechia visa: the translation requirement, the 15-day timescale and the direct Baku–Prague flight

Most people applying for a Czechia visa are heading to Prague, and some to Karlovy Vary for treatment. Either way the process is the same: a Schengen visa, 35 euros, VFS Global. But the Czech embassy has one requirement that sets it apart from other Schengen countries, and it is exactly the one that gets applications turned away: translations.

This article covers the process, the translation requirement, the documents, the timescales and the direct flight from Baku to Prague.

How to apply

The Czech embassy has delegated Schengen intake to the VFS Global centre in Baku. Appointments are booked on the VFS site or by phone. On the day you hand in the documents, give fingerprints, and the passport goes to the embassy. The embassy decides within 15 calendar days of receiving the file, extendable to 45 where extra checks are needed. That is longer than the 10 days in the Azerbaijan–EU agreement, so leave plenty of margin for Czechia. The official rules are on the Czech embassy’s Baku page.

The translation requirement

The Czech embassy requires every document and copy in Azerbaijani — the passport copy aside — to be translated into English or Russian, with the translation notarised. That covers the employment letter, the bank statement, marriage and birth certificates, property documents, everything. Many embassies accept a plain translation; Czechia does not. Applications arriving without translations, or without notarisation, are either refused at VFS or sent back later by the embassy for more documents, stretching the timescale.

A practical tip: ask the bank for the statement in English directly — most banks provide it — and cut the translation bill. The employment letter can be issued in English too.

Documents for a Czechia visa

Documents must have been issued within six months of the application. An old bank statement or certificate will not be accepted.

How to get from Baku to Prague

AZAL flies direct between Baku and Prague several times a week in four hours and forty-five minutes. Daily connections through Istanbul and Vienna are available too. Baku–Prague fares peak in December, during Prague’s Christmas markets, and in May and June. Karlovy Vary is two hours from Prague by bus or train.

Prague is the gateway to Central Europe: Vienna is four hours away, Dresden two, Krakow six. Plenty of people therefore see Czechia alongside its neighbours; among group tours across Europe, the Prague–Vienna–Budapest line is one of the most popular. On such a trip the visa comes from the country with the most nights — worth keeping in mind when choosing the tour.

Frequently asked questions about the Czechia visa

How long does it take?

The embassy states 15 calendar days; with the VFS appointment the whole process runs four to six weeks. Start at least two months before you travel.

Are the documents different for treatment in Karlovy Vary?

Yes: an official confirmation letter from the sanatorium and proof of payment are required. Because these make the purpose of the trip plain, visas for treatment are usually issued without trouble.

Can you cross into Germany and Austria?

Yes, a Schengen visa is valid in every Schengen country. The condition is that the main part of the trip is in Czechia and that you stay within the 90/180 limit.

In closing

The most important things with a Czechia visa are knowing about the translation requirement in advance and leaving generous margin on time. The rest is an ordinary Schengen visa: 35 euros, VFS Global, standard documents. The Viza.az team arranges the notarised translations, books the VFS appointment and prepares the documents for treatment trips to Karlovy Vary.
