A Kyrgyzstan visa is not required of citizens of Azerbaijan and you may stay up to 90 days. Bishkek, Issyk-Kul and the Ala-Archa gorge are the most accessible mountain destination in Central Asia, and there is a direct flight from Baku to Bishkek. At the end of 2025 Kyrgyzstan reduced the visa-free period to 30 days for many countries, and that news worried citizens of Azerbaijan too; but the bilateral agreement has not changed and for us it remains 90 days.
In this article we explain the conditions of the visa-free regime, the registration rule, the Issyk-Kul and mountain route, the flight from Baku to Bishkek and the options for combining the trip with neighbouring countries.
Do you need a visa for Kyrgyzstan?
No. There is a bilateral agreement between Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, and on an ordinary passport you can stay up to 90 days without a visa; on the list of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 90 days is shown opposite Kyrgyzstan. The «30 days in 60» rule applied to 55 countries from 31 December 2025 concerns the unilateral visa-free list and does not extend to citizens of Azerbaijan arriving under the bilateral agreement. The Kyrgyz side’s rules are given on Kyrgyzstan’s official electronic visa portal.

The registration rule: no Kyrgyzstan visa, but there is a 10-day limit
Citizens of Azerbaijan can stay in Kyrgyzstan up to 10 days without registration. Those staying longer must register at their address: when you stay in a hotel the hotel does it itself, and when you stay in a rented flat or at a relative’s house you go to the migration service together with the owner. On a two-week Issyk-Kul trip this matters; staying unregistered means a fine on departure. On a one-week trip nothing needs to be done.

How do you get from Baku to Bishkek?
AZAL flies direct between Baku and Bishkek and the flight takes about 3.5 hours; the alternative is via Almaty or Tashkent, and from Almaty to Bishkek it is only 4 hours overland, with Kazakhstan visa-free as well. Baku–Bishkek ticket prices rise in July and August, the Issyk-Kul season; May-June and September are the best time for both the weather and the price.

The mountain and lake route without a Kyrgyzstan visa
The classic route is 7–10 days: 1–2 days in Bishkek, a day trip to Ala-Archa national park, Cholpon-Ata on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, Skazka canyon and Karakol on the southern shore, and from there a trek to Altyn-Arashan or Lake Ala-Kul. A night in a yurt, a horse ride and Lake Song-Kul are Kyrgyzstan’s most distinctive experiences. Issyk-Kul tour programmes are organised in summer and require no visa documents; a fully visa-free Central Asia route of 2–3 weeks together with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is possible too.
