Do you need an Ecuador visa? 90 days visa-free, the Galápagos fee and a fully visa-free route

An Ecuador visa is not required of citizens of Azerbaijan and you can stay up to 90 days. In Latin America this is one of the most open countries for our passport: along with Colombia, Ecuador admits us visa-free, while Brazil, Argentina and Peru require a visa.

The main purpose of those going to Ecuador is the Galápagos islands, and this is exactly where, even without a visa, there are costs and rules: a separate transit control card and a national park fee are paid to enter the islands. In this article we explain the terms of visa-free entry, the Galápagos rules and the visa-free route from Baku to Quito.

Do you need an Ecuador visa?

No. Citizens of Azerbaijan enter Ecuador visa-free on an ordinary passport and can stay up to 90 days within a 12-month period. This is for tourism and short business trips. To stay longer you can apply to the migration authorities inside the country and extend the period, for a fee. The general rules are gathered on the Wikipedia page on Ecuador’s visa policy.

What do they ask at the border?

The passport must be valid for at least 6 months. The migration officer may ask for your return ticket and the address where you will be staying. Ecuador has one particularity: the law provides for a travel insurance requirement for tourists and it can be asked for at the border. In practice they do not always check, but keep the insurance to hand, and you need it anyway because medical care in the Galápagos and the Andes is expensive.

The Galápagos islands: no Ecuador visa, but there is a fee

You fly to the Galápagos on a domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil. Before the flight you buy a transit control card at the airport for 20 dollars, and then on landing on the islands you pay the national park fee. For foreign tourists that fee has been 200 dollars since 2024 and is paid in cash. Which is to say that for every person going to the Galápagos the entry alone comes to 220 dollars, on top of the ticket and the hotel.

To stay on the islands you must have a hotel booking and a return ticket in advance, as the control card is not issued without them. The rules are strict in order to limit the flow of tourists: some islands can only be entered with a licensed guide.

The visa-free route from Baku to Ecuador

There is no direct flight and it is usual to fly to Ecuador via Europe: Iberia and Air Europa via Madrid and KLM via Amsterdam fly to Quito. A citizen of Azerbaijan does not need a Schengen visa on these routes as long as they do not leave the airport transit zone, but long waits and overnight transits are not comfortable without a Schengen visa.

The fully visa-free and comfortable option is the Istanbul–Bogotá route: Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul to Bogotá, Colombia admits citizens of Azerbaijan visa-free, and from Bogotá to Quito there is a 1.5-hour flight. On this route no visa at all is needed and you get to see Colombia as well. The whole journey takes 20–24 hours. To buy a cheap air ticket, compare the Istanbul–Bogotá and Bogotá–Quito legs separately, because Latin American domestic flights are not always visible in the big systems.

Those going to Latin America for the first time often combine Ecuador with Colombia and Peru. Such group tours plan the route and the altitude acclimatisation in the Andes in advance; do not forget that a separate visa is needed for Peru.

Things to know before the trip

  • Altitude. Quito is at 2,850 metres. A headache and tiredness on the first day are normal, so do not plan a heavy programme for the day you arrive.
  • Money. Ecuador has no currency of its own and the US dollar is used. Take small notes, as 100-dollar bills are not accepted in many places.
  • Safety. Crime has risen in recent years in Guayaquil and the coastal regions. Quito and the mountain regions are relatively quiet; avoid walking at night.
  • Yellow fever. Vaccination is recommended for those going to the Amazon region.
  • Season. For the Galápagos June–November is cool and dry and December–May warm and rainy; each has its own advantage.
