Do you need a visa for the Bahamas? Visa-free entry and the US transit trap

A Bahamas visa is not required of citizens of Azerbaijan. You arrive with your passport and can stay up to 3 months. On paper that makes it one of the most accessible destinations in the Caribbean.

In real life, though, most Azerbaijanis wanting to go to the Bahamas run into a wall: the great majority of flights to the islands pass through the USA, and the USA requires a visa even for transit. Which means that although the Bahamas is visa-free, the route is tied to a visa. In this article we explain both the entry rules and how to get around that trap.

Do you need a visa for the Bahamas?

No. Citizens of Azerbaijan enter the Bahamas without a visa and can stay as tourists for up to 3 months. That is a unilateral decision of the Bahamian government. At the border the passport is stamped and the stamp states the period allowed. They usually write a period matching the return date on the ticket, so the 3 months are not given automatically.

What do they ask at the border?

The requirements of the Bahamian immigration service are simple. The passport must be valid at least to the end of the trip and have 2 blank pages for the stamp. We advise six months of remaining validity, because the transit country’s and the airline’s requirements may be stricter. Besides that, a paid return ticket or a ticket onward to the next country, confirmation of where you will be staying and, if needed, a document showing your funds are asked for.

And anyone bringing in more than 10,000 dollars in cash must declare it. A requirement to fill in an online immigration card before arrival may also apply, and the airline reminds you of that when you buy the ticket. The official requirements are set out on the page of the Bahamas Department of Immigration.

The US transit trap: no Bahamas visa, but the road is closed

The Bahamas is only 80 kilometres from Florida, and most of the flights arriving at Nassau airport come from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York and Atlanta. Many European airlines stop in a US city too. The problem is that at a US airport there is no such thing as a transit zone: every passenger formally enters the country, which means you must have an American visa.

For a citizen of Azerbaijan that means three options:

  • If you have an American visa, the most comfortable route is Baku–Istanbul–Miami–Nassau. The flight from Miami to Nassau takes an hour and there are dozens of services a day.
  • If you have no American visa, you go via London. British Airways flies direct from London Heathrow to Nassau. Citizens of Azerbaijan can change flights in Heathrow’s transit zone without a UK visa.
  • Going via Canada is not advisable, because Canada requires a visa for transit too.

So the realistic route is either through the USA with an American visa or visa-free via London. The second option is long, and the whole journey from Baku to Nassau takes more than 20 hours.

What does a trip to the Bahamas without a visa cost?

No money goes on the visa, but the trip itself is expensive. The Bahamas is one of the dearest destinations in the Caribbean region: the hotels of Nassau and Paradise Island are above European prices, and food and transport are not cheap either. The ticket is the biggest expense, and a return via London is usually between 1500 and 2500 manats. Before buying, comparing on sites that let you buy flights online by shifting the dates a few weeks either way can bring the price down considerably.

If the budget is limited, there is a way to see the same sea and palm-lined shores more cheaply: Caribbean cruises call at the Bahamas, and a week-long cruise is sometimes cheaper than a week in a Nassau hotel. Incidentally, you could also start with a nearer destination from among the good-value foreign tours for a sea trip.

Points to know before the trip

  • Season. December to April is the best time, but the prices are the highest then too. June–November is the hurricane season.
  • Money. The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted everywhere. You cannot go directly from manats to Bahamian dollars, so take dollars.
  • Insurance. Not required, but medical care on the islands is very expensive and in serious cases the patient is taken to Florida. It is advisable for the insurance to cover US territory too.
  • Island hopping. The Bahamas is made up of more than 700 islands. You reach islands like Exuma and Eleuthera from Nassau by small plane or ferry, and that has to be planned in advance.
  • Driving. Traffic drives on the left. For car hire the Azerbaijani driving licence is valid for up to 3 months.

Frequently asked questions about the Bahamas visa

Can you stay longer than 3 months?

Not without a visa. To stay longer, to work or to study you must apply to the immigration department inside the country and get permission.

Do you need a Bahamas visa when arriving by cruise ship?

No, a citizen of Azerbaijan arriving by cruise needs no visa either. But most Caribbean cruises start in Miami, which means you will need a US visa to board the ship.

Are extra documents needed for children?

The child must have their own passport. If travelling with one parent, the other parent’s notarised consent may be required on leaving Azerbaijan.

In closing

No visa is needed for the Bahamas, but the key to the trip is the route: either get an American visa and go through the USA, or go visa-free via London. The Viza.az team helps in both cases: with preparing the application for a US visa or with building the transit route via London.
