A Slovakia visa: the Wednesday email, 35 euros and Bratislava via Vienna

A Slovakia visa is one of the least known Schengen visas in Baku, and that is exactly why it is sometimes the most comfortable: the embassy is small, the queue is nothing like the ones at the Italian or Spanish embassies, and there is no extra service charge. The difficulty is in the appointment system: since February 2026 the Slovak embassy takes appointment requests only by email, and only on one day of the week, and when there is a mistake in the request it does not reply.

In this article we explain how to get an appointment by email, the fee, the documents, Bratislava’s joint route with Vienna and the flight options from Baku to Slovakia.

How do you get an appointment for a Slovakia visa?

Since 13 February 2026 a new mechanism has been in place: the appointment request is sent by email to the embassy’s separate appointment address and the embassy confirms it in advance. Requests for a Schengen visa are accepted only on Wednesdays between 9:00 and 16:00; letters sent on another day are not looked at. The letter must state the passport details, the travel dates, the purpose and a contact number precisely, otherwise the request is rejected. When the confirmation arrives, the documents are submitted to the embassy in person on the appointed day. The exact address and the rules are given on the Baku site of the Slovak embassy.

The BLS/Visametric centre that works with Slovakia provides information support in Baku and answers questions about the document list, but the appointment still goes through the embassy.

Slovakia is popular in Baku for student visas too: those going to the universities of Bratislava and Košice get their appointment through the same email mechanism, but in the national «D» visa category.

Bratislava and Vienna: which country is the visa asked for?

Bratislava is only 60 kilometres from Vienna and most of those travelling from Azerbaijan enter through Vienna airport. Under the Schengen rule the visa is asked for the country where you spend the most days: if you stay 5 days in Slovakia and 2 in Austria, the Slovak visa is the right one and entering from Vienna is not a problem. But someone staying 4 days in Vienna and 1 in Bratislava must get an Austrian visa. The Slovak embassy checks this calculation against the hotel bookings in the application.

How do you get from Baku to Slovakia?

There is no direct flight to Bratislava. The most comfortable way is Vienna: Austrian Airlines flies from Baku to Vienna, and the bus from Vienna airport to Bratislava takes 1 hour. Via Istanbul you can also fly to Bratislava and Košice with Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. Baku–Vienna ticket prices rise during the Christmas markets and the summer holidays, while February and November are the good-value months.

Slovakia is toured on the Central European route together with Vienna, Budapest and Prague; in European coach tour programmes Bratislava is usually a one-day stop, and the visa is asked for whichever country you stay in longest.

Frequently asked questions about the Slovakia visa

How long does a Slovakia visa take?

The embassy states 10–15 days. Because of the Wednesday rule getting an appointment can take a week or two, so count on 4–5 weeks for the whole process.

There is no reply to the appointment request, what should I do?

Check that the letter was sent on a Wednesday, during working hours and with complete information. Send it again the following Wednesday; sending several letters in one week does not help.

Can you cross into the Czech Republic and Austria on a Slovak visa?

Yes, a Schengen visa is valid for the whole zone. Only your main country of travel must be Slovakia.

In closing

In terms of the fee and the documents a Slovakia visa is among the simplest Schengen visas, and the main subtlety is getting an appointment by email on a Wednesday. The Viza.az team helps with drafting the appointment request correctly, preparing the document package and building the Vienna–Bratislava route correctly from the visa point of view.
