Male is the capital of the Maldives and most tourists only see it through a window. Yet the airport is on a separate island and the transfer to a resort happens here, which means a few hours or a night pass here anyway. The city is among the most densely populated capitals in the world and bears no resemblance to the resort photographs. Below I have written about both the city and the local island option.
The city itself in Male
The island is less than two kilometres long, but more than two hundred thousand people live on it. The streets are narrow, there are many motorbikes, and the buildings are on top of one another. You can walk the whole city in three or four hours.
The old Friday Mosque, called Hukuru Miskiy, is built of coral stone and is close to five hundred years old; it is on the UNESCO list. The Islamic Centre beside it is the city’s best-known building with its golden dome. The fish market works early in the morning and is the liveliest place in the city.

A resort island or a local island
This is the decision that determines the whole budget. A resort island belongs entirely to one hotel, beachwear and alcohol are unrestricted there, and the price starts from three hundred dollars a night. An all-inclusive package is practically compulsory, because there is no other restaurant on the island.
On local islands, for example Maafushi, a guest house is fifty to a hundred dollars a night. But local rules apply there: there is no alcohol, and on the beach you can wear beachwear only in the section set aside for tourists. This difference has to be known in advance, because changing it after you arrive is expensive.
The boat, the transfer and what is under the sea
From Velana airport to Male the boat is ten minutes and very cheap. To the resorts you go by fast boat or seaplane, and the price is calculated by the distance, which varies from half an hour to half a day. The seaplane only flies in daylight, so passengers landing at night have to stay in an airport hotel.
The snorkelling and sandbank tours that leave from the local islands are far cheaper than the resort programmes, and the coral and turtles are in the same waters. Manta rays and whale sharks appear seasonally. Comparing snorkelling and sandbank programmes in advance works out cheaper than the prices offered on the island.
Budget and rules in Male
Since 29 April 2026 a bilateral visa-free regime has been in force between Azerbaijan and the Maldives, and you can stay up to 90 days on an ordinary citizen’s passport. Previously a free 30-day permit was given at the airport; now the period is considerably longer. A return ticket and confirmation of accommodation may be asked for, while the Imuga arrival form is compulsory even without a visa. In the city payment by card works comfortably, while on the local islands you have to keep cash.
| A hotel in the city | 60–120 dollars a night |
| A guest house on a local island | 50–100 dollars |
| A resort island | Starts from 300 dollars |
| The airport boat | Ten minutes, very cheap |
For a one-night transit a city hotel is far more economical than a resort, so compare the city and island options side by side. There is no direct flight; you go via Doha, Dubai and Istanbul, so check ticket prices in the Male direction together with the transit options. Official tourism information is on the Maldives’ official tourism portal.
Season in Male
November–April is the dry season, the number of sunny days is at its highest and so are the prices. The end of December and January are the most expensive period. May–October is the rainy monsoon, but the rain is short and prices halve, while the surf swells come precisely in these months. The temperature stays around thirty degrees all year, so cold is not an issue.
Conclusion
Male is not the Maldives of the resort photographs, but it is the door to the trip and is worth a day. Spend the transit night in the city, settle the difference between a resort and a local island in advance, choose a daytime flight for the seaplane, and take the snorkelling from a local island. If you want to plan the Maldives with a ready-made package, you can look at the tour options. For a route, fill in the application form.
Note: transfer prices and island rules are changeable, so confirm with the hotel before booking.
