Canada is one of the longest waits of any visa for citizens of Azerbaijan. The process itself is clear enough: an online application, a fee, fingerprints in Baku. But the decision is made in Canada, and there is no telling in advance whether it will take weeks or months. Applications from Baku have taken anywhere from one month to several.

Getting a Canada visa, step by step
- An IRCC account. Open an account on the Canadian immigration service’s site and complete the application online. It is in English or French and asks about travel history, work, family and finances.
- Uploading documents. The system builds an individual list for you; each document is scanned and uploaded.
- The fees. 100 dollars for the visa and 85 for biometrics, paid online by card.
- Biometrics. After payment you receive a biometrics letter and have 30 days to give fingerprints and a photograph at the VFS Global centre in Baku, at 64 Neftchilar Avenue.
- The wait. The decision is made at a Canadian visa office. If it is positive you get a «passport request» letter, send the passport through VFS and receive it back with the visa foil.

Which documents really count?
Canada holds no interview; the decision rests entirely on the file. The visa officer is looking for two things: a purpose of travel that is genuine and funded, and evidence that you will leave when the visa expires.

How to fly from Baku to Canada
There is no direct flight. People reach Toronto and Montreal via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, or via London combining AZAL with Air Canada or British Airways; the journey takes 15 to 18 hours in total. Connecting at London, you need no British visa as long as you stay inside Heathrow’s transit zone. Routing through the United States, on the other hand, requires an American visa, because the US has no transit zone. Baku–Toronto fares rise in summer and December; buy the ticket after the visa arrives, since the timing is unpredictable.
Tourist trips to Canada are often combined with the United States: Niagara, New York, Toronto. Such Canada tours require two separate visas, and with both processing times in mind, preparation should start four to six months ahead.

How long does a Canada visa take?
There is no fixed time. The Canadian government’s site shows a current estimate per country, and the figure moves from week to week. Applications from Baku have taken from one month to several. Apply at least three to four months before the trip.
Do you only give fingerprints once?
Yes, biometrics are valid for 10 years. You do not need to give them again, or pay the 85 dollars again, on later applications.
What to do after a refusal?
There is no appeal on a visitor visa, but the refusal letter gives the reason. If something in your situation has changed, you can apply again with new documents. Resubmitting the same file produces the same outcome.
