Citizens of Azerbaijan do not need a Qatar visa and may stay for up to 30 days. Doha is the main connecting point for flights from Baku to distant Asia, Africa and Australia, and most people who see Qatar arrive exactly that way, between two flights. The visa-free regime makes it easy: no document is needed to leave the transit zone and go into the city, and on long layovers Qatar Airways even provides a free hotel.
This article covers the terms of the visa-free regime, the passport requirement, how to turn a layover into a city visit, the options for staying longer and the Baku–Doha flights.
Do you need a Qatar visa?
No. A bilateral agreement between Azerbaijan and Qatar allows stays of up to 30 days without a visa on an ordinary passport; the list published by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows 30 days against Qatar. At the border they check that the passport has at least six months’ validity, and may ask for a return ticket and hotel booking. Working and staying long term require a residence permit arranged by an employer. The official entry rules are on the official Visit Qatar portal.

No visa: turning a layover into a trip
Most people flying from Baku to Bangkok, Bali, Colombo, Male or Auckland pass through Doha, and the layover can run 5 to 12 hours. Thanks to the visa-free regime you can spend that time in the city rather than the airport: the metro takes 30 minutes from Hamad airport to Souq Waqif, with the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche nearby. On layovers longer than eight hours Qatar Airways offers a free hotel and city tour under certain conditions — worth checking when you book. Just check your bags through to the final destination and be back at the airport three hours before departure.

Can you stay longer than 30 days?
As a tourist you can extend the 30 days by another 30 inside Qatar through the Interior Ministry’s Metrash app, for a fee. Working is a different matter: employment in Qatar is possible only with a work visa and residence card arranged by the employer, and starting work on a tourist entry means deportation and an entry ban. Employees bringing family with them obtain a separate family residence permit.

How to fly from Baku to Doha
Qatar Airways flies between Baku and Doha daily in about three hours, and that service is the main gateway to Asian destinations. Baku–Doha fares rise for those visiting Doha itself in the winter season, especially around Christmas and Novruz; summer is cheap because of the 45-degree heat, but poor for walking around the city. November to March is the best time.
Two or three days is enough for Doha: Souq Waqif, the Katara cultural village, Lusail and a desert safari. Doha tour packages are often added as a two-day stop at the start of a longer Asian trip, and need no visa paperwork.
Worth knowing before you go
- Money. The Qatari riyal, 3.64 to the dollar. Cards work everywhere and cash is hardly needed.
- Season. November to March is comfortable; June to September brings 40 to 45 degrees.
- Dress. This is a conservative country; shoulders and knees should be covered in public.
- Medicines and alcohol. Some medicines are banned — carry a prescription; bringing in alcohol is prohibited.
- Transport. The Doha metro is cheap and comfortable, and its three lines reach the main sights.
Frequently asked questions about travel to Qatar
How many times can you enter without a visa?
There is no official limit on the number of entries, but frequent long stays raise questions at the border. A few short trips a year as a tourist cause no trouble.
Can you continue to Saudi Arabia or the UAE?
Yes. The UAE admits citizens of Azerbaijan without a visa, and Saudi Arabia issues an online eVisa; there are daily flights from Doha to both.
Do you need a Hayya card?
No. The Hayya system is for nationalities that need a visa and for specific events; since citizens of Azerbaijan enter visa-free, it is not required.
In closing
No Qatar visa is needed, you may stay 30 days, and a Doha layover can turn into a free day in the city; the only things to remember are the six-month passport rule and not working on a tourist entry. The Viza.az team helps build long-haul routes through Doha and plan the stopover.
