A Dominica visa is not required of citizens of Azerbaijan, but half the people reading that sentence have the wrong country in mind. The Commonwealth of Dominica is a small island state in the Caribbean, its capital is Roseau, and it is known for volcanic mountains and waterfalls. The Dominican Republic, with the beaches of Punta Cana, is an entirely different country and does require a visa from citizens of Azerbaijan. This article is about the first one.
The visa-free stay in Dominica is 21 days, and reaching the island is harder than reaching the other Caribbean islands, because there is no large airport taking international flights. Below we explain the entry rules and the route that actually works.
Do you need a Dominica visa?
No. Dominica admits citizens of Azerbaijan without a visa and allows a tourist stay of up to 21 days. That is one of the shortest terms among the Caribbean islands, so plan the trip accordingly. If you need longer, you can apply to the immigration office inside the country for an extension. The general rules are gathered on the Wikipedia page on Dominica’s visa policy.
| Visa required? | No |
| How long can you stay? | Up to 21 days |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months |
| May be asked at the border | Return ticket, hotel booking, proof of funds |
| Currency | East Caribbean dollar (XCD); US dollars accepted |
| How to get there | Small aircraft via Antigua, Barbados or the French islands |
What do they ask at the border?
The passport must be valid for at least 6 months. The immigration officer may ask for a return ticket, the address where you will stay and, if needed, a document confirming your funds. An exit fee is paid when leaving the country, usually included in the ticket price. Insurance is not required, but the island is limited on medical care and serious cases are flown to neighbouring islands, so going without insurance is not sensible.

How to reach Dominica without a visa
This is the hardest part of the trip. Dominica’s Douglas–Charles airport takes regional flights only. So you first fly to a larger Caribbean island and then cross to Dominica on a small aircraft. For a citizen of Azerbaijan the realistic options are these:
- Via Antigua. Baku–Istanbul–London–Antigua, then a 40-minute regional flight from Antigua to Dominica. Antigua admits citizens of Azerbaijan without a visa, and no visa is needed in London’s transit zone.
- Via Barbados. London–Barbados, then a regional flight to Dominica. Barbados is also visa-free.
- Via Guadeloupe or Martinique. These islands are French territory, and entering them requires not a Schengen visa but a separate French overseas territory visa. Choose this route only if you hold that visa.
Routes through the USA require an American visa. The whole journey from Baku to Dominica takes over 24 hours and needs two or three separate tickets; when looking for cheap air tickets, compare each leg of the long route separately, because regional flights do not always show up in the big systems.

Who goes to Dominica, and why?
Dominica is not for a beach holiday but for ecotourism. The island has the world’s second largest boiling lake, dozens of waterfalls, rainforest trails and dive sites. The people who go are mostly nature enthusiasts and cruise passengers, since most Caribbean cruises call at Roseau. A citizen of Azerbaijan arriving by cruise also needs no visa — but as most cruises start in Miami, an American visa becomes necessary.
Before committing to a route this distant and this complicated it is worth comparing prices for foreign tours: the same budget buys a longer and easier holiday in the Mediterranean or Southeast Asia. Dominica is a destination for those going precisely for its nature.
What to know before the trip
- Season. December to April is the dry season. June to November is hurricane season, and Dominica was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
- Money. The East Caribbean dollar, with US dollars accepted everywhere. Cash machines and cards are reliable only in Roseau, so travel to the villages with cash.
- Driving. Traffic on the left, and the mountain roads are narrow and steep. Car hire requires a local temporary permit.
- Trails. National park trails need an entry ticket, and a guide is recommended for the trip to the Boiling Lake.
Frequently asked questions about the Dominica visa
Can you enter the Dominican Republic on a Dominica visa?
They are different countries, with few direct connections between them. The Dominican Republic does require a visa from citizens of Azerbaijan; only holders of a valid US, Canadian, British or Schengen visa may enter without one.
Can the 21 days be extended?
Yes, by applying to the immigration office inside the country and paying a fee. But it must be done before the 21 days run out.
In closing
No Dominica visa is needed, but the island is distant, the term is short and the route is complicated. Going visa-free via Antigua or Barbados is possible; going via the USA or the French islands takes an extra visa. The Viza.az team helps build the multi-leg route and check the transit rules.
