A Morocco visa has not been required of citizens of Azerbaijan since 28 August 2024. Until that date the Moroccan visa was one of the hard ones to get, because there was no embassy in Baku; now, on an ordinary passport, you can stay visa-free for up to 90 days. Marrakesh, Fez, Casablanca and Chefchaouen opened up for the Azerbaijani traveller in a single day.
In this article we explain the terms of the visa-free regime, the border requirements, the ways of reaching Morocco from Baku and the practical points of the trip.
Do you need a Morocco visa?
No. The agreement on the mutual abolition of the visa requirement for holders of ordinary passports between Azerbaijan and Morocco came into force on 28 August 2024. In the list of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Morocco is marked with 90 days. Tourism, visiting relatives and business meetings are included in this regime; to work, to study and to stay longer than 90 days a separate permit is needed. Morocco’s own consular rules are given on the official portal of the Moroccan Consular Service.
| Is a visa required? | No, since August 2024 |
| How long can you stay? | Up to 90 days |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after entry |
| May be asked at the border | Return ticket, hotel booking, means of support |
| Direct flight | None, via Istanbul, Doha or Dubai |
| Currency | Moroccan dirham, exchanged only inside the country |
What do they ask at the border?
The passport’s validity must be at least 6 months after entry. The border officer may ask for your return ticket, the address where you will be staying and, if needed, your means of support; in practice tourists are mainly asked for their passport and arrival card. The arrival card is filled in on paper on the plane or at the airport, the passport is stamped and the length of stay is written in. Insurance is not required, but is advised.

How do you get from Baku to Morocco?
There is no direct flight. People fly to Casablanca and Marrakesh with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai, and the whole journey takes 9–12 hours. As the transit is in Turkey and the Gulf countries, no extra visa is needed. You can also fly via Europe, for example through Paris or Madrid, and a Schengen visa is not required as long as you do not leave the transit zone. Baku–Casablanca air ticket prices rise at Novruz and in the summer months; flying straight to Marrakesh saves you the 3-hour train from Casablanca.

Where can you go in Morocco without a visa?
The visa-free regime covers the whole country. The classic route is Marrakesh, Fez, Chefchaouen and Casablanca, with Merzouga added for a desert camp and Essaouira for the ocean. Inside the country the high-speed train links Casablanca and Tangier in 2 hours, and there are ordinary trains and buses to the other cities. Morocco is a new destination for travellers from Azerbaijan, and Morocco tour programmes have started appearing since the visa-free regime; for a first visit, going with a guide makes a lot easier in the markets and the narrow streets.
Things to know before the trip
- Money. The dirham is a currency that cannot be taken out of the country and is exchanged only in Morocco. Take euros or dollars; cards work in the big cities, and in the markets and villages you need cash.
- Season. March–May and September–November are the best time. In summer Marrakesh goes above 40 degrees, while the coastal cities are cooler.
- The market. Prices are settled by bargaining, so start from half the first price quoted.
- Language. Arabic and French; English works in the tourist areas.
- Children. The child must have their own passport; when travelling with one parent, the other’s notarised consent may be required when leaving Azerbaijan.
Frequently asked questions about the Morocco visa
Can you stay more than 90 days in Morocco without a visa?
No. To stay longer you need an extension by applying to the police inside the country, or a visa in advance.
Can you cross from Morocco to Spain by ferry?
There is a 1-hour ferry from Tangier to Tarifa, but Spain is in Schengen and a Schengen visa is needed. Without a visa you can only stay on the Moroccan side.
Do you need an extra permit for a desert camp?
No, the Merzouga and Zagora desert camps are tourist areas and no permit is required; just do not go to the regions near the Algerian border.
