Azerbaijan is not on Japan’s visa-free list, so a visa must be obtained in advance for every purpose, including tourism and business trips.

On 1 July 2026 Japan raised its visa fees for the first time in 48 years. The fee for a single-entry visa rose fivefold to 15,000 yen, and a multiple-entry visa now costs 30,000 yen. Payment is made in local currency at the rate set by the embassy.

Applications are accepted in person at the consular section of the Japanese embassy in Baku; documents sent by post are not considered. A decision usually takes five to fourteen working days, and in some cases more than two weeks. The itinerary, accommodation bookings and financial documents are the part the Japanese consulate pays particular attention to. Viza.az prepares this file in the country’s own format.

Documents required for a visa to Japan

  • Ordinary passport The original and a copy of the data page are submitted together.
  • Completed visa application form The embassy's own form; it can be completed by hand or on a computer.
  • Photograph White background, taken within the last six months.
  • Day-by-day itinerary The Japanese consulate pays particular attention to this document: it lists the city, accommodation and activity for each day.
  • Flight reservation A flight confirmation or booking document for Japan.
  • Hotel reservation Proof of accommodation covering the whole stay.
  • Bank statement Covering the last three to six months; it must show you can cover the trip and your stay in Japan.
  • Letter from your employer Stating your position, salary and the dates of your leave.
  • The host's documents If a relative or acquaintance is inviting you: their residence permit, employment letter, proof of income and evidence of the relationship.
  • Submitting documents in person The application goes straight to the embassy, so there is no extra visa centre fee.
